Assumed Knowledge

Unit Description

This unit will introduce students to the foundation of studies in paramedicine and the evolving role and function of a paramedic whilst at the same time preparing them for further study and work integrated learning. In this unit, students will develop primary clinical skills in a out-of-hospital environment and recognise ambulance equipment. In addition, students will learn to apply principles and practices of self care, mental and physical preparedness for work in challenging and critical situations. Communication skills will be developed with a focus on applying the principles of effective communication and clinical reasoning in a professional practice in paramedicine.

The unit includes a one (1) week intensive on Casuarina Campus. The intensive week is compulsory, and students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation in relation to the intensive.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the WPAR01 Bachelor of Paramedicine.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Describe contemporary paramedic practice and identify how ambulance services operate within Australia and its legal requirements.
2.	Apply the key principles of effective interpersonal and interprofessional communication including developing trust, respect and rapport to a variety of audiences.
3.	Conduct simulated paramedic activities in a professional and culturally aware manner with a focus on effective teamwork.
4.	Demonstrate understanding of commonly used medical terminology and identification of ambulance equipment.
5.	Understand and recognize the risk and challenges faced whilst working as a paramedic through utilising self-care strategies to ensure continued success in the field.
