Unit Description

This unit will introduce students to the theoretical foundations underpinning professional paramedic practice, including governance, communication, team work, leadership and scope of practice. Manual handling and infection control will be introduced and developed to support safe work practices in the pre-hospital setting. It will also introduce and develop skills in approaching scenes and patients systematically in the pre-hospital setting including basic and intermediate life support. The clinical techniques, skills, approaches and problem solving required for professional paramedic practice will continue to be developed in a controlled, simulated, interdisciplinary team environment. The foundations of Paramedicine professional practice are embedded within this unit.

The unit includes a one (1) week intensive on Casuarina Campus. The intensive week is compulsory, and students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation in relation to the intensive.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the WPAR01 Bachelor of Paramedicine.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply skills and knowledge associated with written and oral communication, confidentiality and consent when obtaining and documenting a comprehensive patient history.
2.	Identify current perspectives in governance, scope of practice, cultural and social awareness, teamwork and leadership in professional paramedic practice.
3.	Describe primary emergency management processes and use of correct medical terminology in the pre-hospital setting using limited resources in a culturally appropriate manner.
4.	Outline the principles of safe work practice including manual handling and infection control in the pre-hospital setting.
5.	Conduct a pre-hospital systematic scene and patient assessment including risk assessment and management whilst demonstrating problem-solving skills in the treatment of patients with critical injuries and illness.
6.	Use pre-hospital equipment in the management of critically ill and injured patients.
