Unit Description

This unit will develop knowledge and skills in caring for obstetric and neonatal patients in the acute setting. In addition to acquiring skills to assist with normal deliveries and newborn care in the out of hospital environment, students will learn how to identify and manage obstetrical emergencies and neonatal resuscitation. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy will be taught alongside extrinsic factors that influence women's health and wellbeing during these times. The unit will also encompass a broader education into women's health outside of pregnancy and will include discussions on topics surrounding inequalities in healthcare, biases and domestic violence. Students will will be taught the vital role paramedics undertake in the support and management of female patients.

The unit includes a one (1) week intensive on Casuarina Campus. The intensive week is compulsory, and students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation in relation to the intensive.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the WPAR01 Bachelor of Paramedicine.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Communicate effectively in a culturally aware manner when dealing with obstetric emergencies and other acute health issues in women.
2.	Describe the development of a pregnancy, normal and abnormal, in full and pre term delivery.
3.	Synthesise and implement a management plan of patients that are in labour in the pre-hospital setting.
4.	Design and implement a management plan for patients that are experiencing an abnormal labour in a pre-hospital setting.
5.	Analyse immediate health assessment of the newborn.
6.	Discuss the emergencies in relation to gynaecologic and obstetric cases applying evidence-based management.
