Unit Description

This unit will provide students an understanding of the normal and abnormal functioning of the human body. Alteration in body systems will be explored for acute and chronic conditions across the lifespan including manifestations and deteriorations.

Common pathological processes which occur across the body systems will be studied to provide a deeper understanding of disease manifestation. This unit will allow students to understand the mechanisms of disease and make a logical link between disease process and its morphological and clinical features.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply a critical understanding of normal and abnormal functioning of body systems throughout the lifespan.
2.	Discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms of acute and chronic diseases across different body systems.
3.	Critically analyse host defence mechanisms to explain the characteristics of microbial and immunological based diseases including their prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
4.	Discuss in depth the pathophysiological processes underlying dysfunction of body systems across the lifespan in response to chronic condition.
5.	Apply appropriate written skills to communicate scientific knowledge and data.
