Unit Description

Students will be introduced to strengths-based, solution focused and narrative approaches to practice. Students will participate in simulated practice by engaging in role plays and small group workshops and strengthen practical application within diverse fields of practice, including working with First Nations peoples. Students will develop their critical reflection skills on the use of self in practice, skills for engagement, assessment, planning, crisis intervention and closure.

Important Information

The compulsory 5-day face to face intensive provides a forum for experiential learning and interpersonal skill development. Student attendance is compulsory to meet the Australian Association of Social Workers accreditation standards. Students who do not attend and engage every day will not pass this unit. Students are responsible for arranging travel and accommodation to attend the intensive week.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Articulate the process and dynamics of culturally safe social work practice, including with First Nations peoples and diverse communities.
2.	Apply frameworks for social work practice within a strengths based approach for social work intervention.
3.	Critically reflect on various social work models and the development of own practice framework.
4.	Apply effective communication skills when working with diverse groups of people, and contexts, including engagement, assessment, planning, crisis intervention and closure.
5.	Critically apply skills for working collaboratively with clients, stakeholders and in multidisciplinary contexts.
