This unit introduces students to key quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methods in Applied Linguistics, preparing them to undertake independent research within the discipline. Students critically evaluate the merits and limitations of different research methodologies, apply the methodologies to real-world research contexts, and develop their own research proposal. The unit develops practical skills in academic research writing and research design. It emphasises mixed-methods approaches that integrate corpus linguistics and AI-assisted discourse analysis. Students apply research methodologies to real-world linguistic data, critique methodological choices in published studies, and design a coherent research proposal aligned with their research interests. Students will complete the unit with the foundational knowledge and research literacy required to design, justify, and write a Master's thesis in Applied Linguistics.
