Unit Description

In this unit students will identify theoretical and evidence-based approaches to assessment and evaluation in second language education. The objective of this unit is to engage with the development, implementation, and management of effective second language assessment and reporting. This will encompass various assessment types, while attending to validity and reliability and applying the concept of constructive alignment to learning outcomes. Students will explore the use of tools that can facilitate and enhance effective testing and evaluation, which will include engagement with technology-enhanced solutions.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply knowledge of the main theoretical concepts and principles underpinning effective language assessment and constructive alignment to second language learning and teaching settings.
2.	Critically analyse and evaluate the efficacy of contemporary language testing measures in relation to assessment purpose and education context.
3.	Apply critical judgment in designing appropriate language assessment resources reflecting a strong understanding of key concepts.
4.	Apply theoretical understandings to testing and evaluative strategies to justify embedded outcomes in a language education context.
