Unit Description

This unit will explore the principles and practices underpinning the safe and quality use of medicines (QUM) and clinical reasoning skills required for effective medicine management as a Designated Registered Nurse (RN) Prescriber across diverse and vulnerable populations and healthcare settings. You will evaluate the benefits and risks associated with medicine use and gain an understanding of the regulatory and legislative requirements essential to medicine management. You will consider the application of clinical guidelines, evidence-based practice, individual patient factors, and the importance of cultural safety in delivering person-centred care and improving patient outcomes.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically evaluate the principles of Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) to optimise safe, evidence-based and person-centred medicine management across diverse and vulnerable populations and prescribing environments in prescribing practice.
2.	Interpret and apply regulatory and legislative requirements to clinical decisions and safe prescribing practices within the Designated Registered Nurse Prescriber scope.
3.	Integrate evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, individual patient factors, and cultural safety principles to formulate safe and appropriate medicine management processes.
4.	Demonstrate the application of the National Prescribing Competencies Framework to deliver person centred care optimising patient outcomes.
