Assumed Knowledge

Unit Description

This unit equips students with practical skills for diagnosing and managing common dental diseases. The unit covers the classification and treatment of malocclusions, identification and management of tooth extraction cases, the safe use of ionising radiation for producing orthopantomogram (OPG) radiographs and the administration of local anesthesia for dental procedures. During this unit students will focus on risk assessments, diagnostic procedures, and treatments for dental caries and periodontal disease with an emphasis is on collaborative treatment planning and patient involvement.

The unit includes 145 hours of compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Students will be rostered during semesters and must attend placements weekly. Students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation associated with WIL.

Important Information

This unit is only available to students enrolled in WOHLT1 Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy

OHT202 and OHT201 are co-requisites. Students must enrol in both units for the same study period.

Students will be required to meet WIL placement requirements and provide evidence of communicable disease status and immunisations to be eligible to complete clinical assessment items.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify risk and diagnose common diseases and abnormalities in dentition and oral structures.
2.	Demonstrate safety and competence in performing dental procedures for the management of dental caries and periodontal disease.
3.	Develop comprehensive treatment plans through collaboration with a range of healthcare professionals and actively involving patients in the joint decision-making processes.
4.	Deliver orthodontic diagnostic and treatment procedures within the scope of an oral health therapist.
5.	Demonstrate safe and competent technique for the use of ionising radiation to produce orthopantomogram (OPG) radiographs.
6.	Demonstrate safe and competent technique in the use local anesthesia for dental procedures.
7.	Demonstrate safe and competent processes and procedures for dental extractions.
