Unit Description

This units examines the concepts of community participation, selfgovernance and community-based approaches to disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and resilience. Two key questions guide study in this unit. Firstly, how do local communities, including indigenous and marginalised communities, cope with multiple risks from natural hazards,
human made hazards and climate change. Secondly, how can community participation and self-governance to disaster risk reduction and climate change be institutionalised in routine development sectors in ways that respect local knowledge authorities and governance structures.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply a variety of participatory risk vulnerability analysis techniques.
2.	Examine disaster and risk management issues in different socio-cultural contexts.
3.	Analyse different local and socio-cultural responses to disaster and emergency contexts.
4.	Critique international emergency, humanitarian and aid institutional engagement with local and culturally specific emergencies and humanitarian responses.
5.	Evaluate barriers to effective, respectful and empowering humanitarian and aid agency institutional engagement with local and socio-culturally specific responses to emergency, humanitarian aid and community development issues.
