Unit Description

In this unit, students engage with a comprehensive range of tools and skills used in Humanitarian, Emergency and Disaster Governance contexts. Students will examine and critique hazard, vulnerability, risk and need assessment processes and apply different methodological approaches locally and globally. Students taking this unit will be equipped with practical knowledge on how to conduct multiple multi-hazard risks and vulnerabilities assessments and humanitarian need assessments, including conflict early warning systems and disaster and emergency needs, post-disaster needs and recovery and climate change vulnerability assessments.

1.	Apply risk analysis methodologies, hazard and vulnerability approaches and approaches to disaster risk management and reduction in emergency management and response scenarios.
2.	Evaluate the characteristics of hazards and related vulnerabilities in local and international emergency and disaster contexts.
3.	Evaluate a range of relevant applications of disaster monitoring and early warning systems.
4.	Critically analyse different emergency and disaster management methodologies in order to identify and apply current best practice.
5.	Critically analyse the theoretical and practical limitations of emergency and disaster management systems in relation to environmental and social conditions.
