Unit Description

This unit builds on the content knowledge and pedagogic content knowledge developed in Mathematics Education 1 (EMA100) and 2 (EMA200), translating them into practice through the processes of mathematising and contextualising. Mathematising moves in from the context to the mathematics, using processes such as mathematical modelling, to enable students to 'read the world' with mathematics. This is a key component of a critical orientation to numeracy. Contextualising moves out from the mathematics to the context, enabling teachers to customise learning to specific contexts including Indigenous education. The development of a socially just and inclusive mathematics curriculum is a key outcome of contextualising.

1.	Understand and use the pedagogical practices of mathematising and contextualising to plan mathematics learning activities for students.
2.	Adopt and enact a critical orientation to numeracy.
3.	Identify and describe opportunities within the school environment for developing numeracy across the curriculum.
4.	Identify and build on the mathematical affordances of a particular sociocultural context.
5.	Identify some contemporary applications of mathematics and describe how they might be used to enrich school mathematics learning.
6.	Contextualise mathematics learning to address the diverse needs of students in primary school contexts.
7.	Engage with the wider mathematics education community to examine key aspects of mathematics education.
