This unit introduces the range of sounds used in the world's languages (phonetics) and how they are used in their respective sound systems (phonology). Students will examine how speech sounds are made by the human vocal tract, how they are transmitted (acoustically) and how they are perceived. They will identify, describe, and analyse the sounds of different languages of the world, including learning the International Phonetic Alphabet (an alphabet linguists use to transcribe a wide range of speech sounds). Students will learn how to use open-source software to assist them in recording, analysing, measuring and editing speech sounds. There will be a focus in this unit on the sounds and sound systems of Australian Indigenous languages.
