Unit Description

This unit provides students with a foundation for the theoretical concepts and principles for midwifery practice in preconception, pregnancy and birth. Students deepen their knowledge and understanding of pregnancy and childbirth as normal physiological processes and explore the different ways in which pregnancy and childbirth change peoples' lives. Content includes identification of potential hazards to a healthy pregnancy and strategies for best outcomes and the interface of common law and statute law as it relates to midwifery. Students will apply concepts from genetics and external factors and environmental conditions to explain how these can affect the division of chromosomes affecting ovum, sperm and the foetus.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system to midwifery practice.
2.	Provide preconceptual education and information to women & their families.
3.	Outline the essential components of antenatal care and education including cultural safety.
4.	Explain the components of, and outcomes of, a healthy diet during pregnancy and lactation.
5.	Identify potential hazards to a healthy pregnancy and strategies for best outcomes and apply concepts from genetics and external factors and environmental conditions to explain how these can affect the division of chromosomes affecting ovum, sperm and the foetus.
6.	Discuss the interface of common law and statute law as it relates to midwifery in order to understand accountability and responsibility.
7.	Describe basic understanding of the process of human labour & birth and the transition period including breastfeeding following birth in the context of midwifery care.
