Unit Description

In this unit students will be introduce the basis of molecular biology so that students understand the concepts and techniques used to manipulate DNA for industry and research. Students will develop an understanding of DNA structure and function, the human genome, genetic engineering and gene therapy, plus gain an appreciation of the ethical and safety regulations. This unit also highlights the importance of human genomics through our increased knowledge of the human genome and new molecular techniques. Students will learn how an individual's genetic make-up can influence their response to drugs and test results.

1.	Perform laboratory techniques for the isolation, amplification, manipulation and quantification of nucleic acids
2.	Explain the basis of techniques for nucleic acids sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of sequencing data
3.	Discuss the processes involved in recombinant DNA technology and the production of biotechnology products
4.	Demonstrate an understanding of human genomics and the applications of genomic analyses in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.
5.	Effectively communicate biotechnology concepts to a scientific audience.
