Unit Description

This unit builds on knowledge acquired in previous units such as clinical examination and decision-making skills. The focus of this unit is on further development of the role of the paramedic and the skills required to provide care at an advanced life support, paramedic level. Students will develop skills in the most common medical and surgical emergencies seen in ambulance practice, managing patients suffering from cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. The unit will address the clinical presentation of cardiovascular/respiratory and associated disorders, ECG interpretation, and respiratory assessment.

Students will be required to attend a 7 day intensive on campus to complete the skill assessments.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Review critically the epidemiology, population health, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of acute and chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
2.	Analyse and implement paramedic management strategies and accurately document and communicate care provided to a patient, in a culturally sensitive manner, for a respiratory or cardiovascular emergency.
3.	Interpret common electrocardiographic (ECG) rhythms and waveforms within the capacity of paramedic practice.
4.	Identify and review commonly used drugs in advanced life support paramedics for the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular conditions.
