Unit Description

This unit provides practical experience in a range of flora and fauna survey techniques. These include Elliott, pitfall and camera trapping, visual survey, and animal handling as well as documenting vegetation and plant identification techniques. Students attend a 5 day field intensive, with preparatory online activities and assignments before and after the trip. Learning activities and assignments focus on sampling design, survey and monitoring in the field, and compilation and analyses of data. The unit provides a basis for further study and professional practice in areas of environmental management and develops field skills commonly used for environmental assessment.

The 5 day field intensive is compulsory and will run in Darwin in the mid semester break.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply flora and fauna field survey techniques.
2.	Critically evaluate flora and fauna survey techniques and their application.
3.	Apply the principles of workplace health and safety, ethics and regulatory requirements when undertaking field work.
4.	Collect and evaluate data including basic statistical analysis and communicate outcomes of biological monitoring.
5.	Work collaboratively in groups in the field.
