Unit Description

This is a third-year unit in which an advanced level of study skills is assumed. Prior completion of units in ecology and statistics is strongly recommended.

This unit has been designed to introduce students to the principles of population ecology and the theory and practice of wildlife management, particularly as encountered in northern Australia. Wildlife management issues in the region include threatened species, environmental pests, native species that are perceived as a problem by some sectors of the community, and wildlife subject to harvest. It is particularly suitable for those considering a career in wildlife or conservation management.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically reflect on the interplay between scientific knowledge and human values and their influence on wildlife management decisions and practice.
2.	Apply knowledge of ecological and population concepts to evaluate wildlife management issues.
3.	Research a broad range of primary literature relevant to wildlife ecology and management and apply to specific contexts.
4.	Run simple population models and interpret outputs.
5.	Recommend wildlife management actions drawing on interpretations of survey or modelling data and an understanding of uncertainty.
