Unit Description

This unit is designed to introduce students to the various disciplines that a graduate medical scientist may experience within the laboratory environment and to prepare students for future success within the course. Students will develop an understanding as to the role of a medical scientist in relation to the diagnosis of disease, quality assurance, accreditation and professionalism. Students will learn both the skills and safety requirements by performing a range of basic laboratory tests that are used in a diagnostic laboratory. This unit also has a site visit to a diagnostic laboratory to allow
further familiarisation with the laboratory environment.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Discuss the role a medical laboratory scientist, and the profession within the healthcare sector.
2.	Explain the different disciplines in a diagnostic laboratory and how samples are processed from collection through to diagnosis of disease.
3.	Competently perform basic laboratory skills used within a diagnostic laboratory, demonstrating safe working practices, confidentiality and cultural sensitivity of samples.
4.	Apply written and verbal communication skills in literacy, numeracy and effective team work.
