Unit Description

Clinical chemistry will cover all of the clinical aspects of biochemistry analysis; core and specialised tests commonly performed in a diagnostic laboratory. Students will learn to interpret laboratory tests relating to lipids, carbohydrate metabolism, liver and kidney function, endocrine analysis and drug monitoring, with an emphasis on both the physiological and biochemical aspects of these tests, to determine and manage various health and disease states. Students will learn the importance of reference ranges, maintaining laboratory safety and quality control and their role in a diagnostic laboratory.

1.	Investigate the underlying causes and manifestations of biochemical disorders and their management and treatment.
2.	Justify the biochemical and physiology rationale for performing tests in a clinical chemistry laboratory.
3.	Critically analyse and interpret the results of routine clinical biochemistry investigations, commenting on data collection and quality control of clinical case studies.
4.	Critically evaluate scientific literature, and communicate written and oral reports using appropriate language with a professional approach.
