Unit Description

This unit introduces fundamental science concepts relevant to the normal and abnormal functioning of the human body. Alteration in body systems will be explored for acute and chronic conditions across the lifespan including manifestations and deteriorations. Common pathological processes which occur across the body systems will be studied to provide a foundation knowledge of microbiology, infection control, chronic disease and cancer.

1.	Demonstrate the fundamental science concept relevant to normal and abnormal functioning of body systems throughout the lifespan.
2.	Categorise the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of acute and chronic diseases across differing body systems.
3.	Evaluate host defences including the immune system to explain the characteristics of microbial and immunological based diseases and their prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
4.	Explain the pathophysiological process of dysfunction or potential dysfunction of body systems across the lifespan in response to chronic conditions.
