Unit Description

This postgraduate unit will develop pre-service teachers' in-depth specialised knowledge for the professional practice as a teacher of junior secondary geography in a 21st Century context. This will be achieved through critical reflection and synthesis of current research literature with reviewing Australian Curriculum. Contemporary issues in geography education, including technological advancements and spatial information systems, are analysed and integrated in the design and development of authentic learning experiences for adolescent students of geography. Pre-service teachers are supported to develop their ability to interpret and communicate skills, critically engage with knowledge and evaluate new ideas in the context of this unit. Please note that Geographic Information System software will be used in this unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically analyse contemporary pedagogical approaches to professional practice as a teacher of geography in context of 21st Century technological advancements.
2.	Identify, critique and apply established theories and understanding of diverse people and cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, in the context of geography education.
3.	Critically reflect and synthesise information and concepts from the Australian Curriculum: Geography and current research literature to develop conceptual ideas about facilitating learning and teaching of geography in junior secondary education.
4.	Apply established theories and knowledge systems to the professional practice of designing and developing authentic learning experiences for junior secondary geography students.
5.	Interpret and communicate ideas, knowledge and experiences through collaborative professional and critically reflective discussion with peers and lecturer.
