This unit identifies and critiques contemporary discourses in the construction of mental health and illness in Australia.Students will analyse and evaluate the evolution of professional concepts and popular misconceptions surrounding mental health. This unit covers multifaceted aspects of mental health. Topics included are identifying common mental health problems, alcohol and other drug use and mental health, and legal, social and political contexts of mental health and illness. This unit focuses on reflective practice, interprofessional competencies, and the models of care employed in contemporary mental health professions. Students will assess the nexus between health care and the law, examining national mental health strategies and mental health legislation.
