Unit Description

This unit introduces students to the human auditory system. Students will gain an understanding of the nature of sound, and anatomy and physiology of the structures involved in hearing, with a focus on the peripheral auditory system. The unit will include common peripheral auditory pathologies resulting from disease or injury, and the impact of those pathologies on hearing.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically apply theoretical knowledge of speech acoustics and psychoacoustics to a range of clinical contexts.
2.	Critically apply theoretical knowledge of the anatomical and physiological processes of the peripheral auditory system in the diagnosis and treatment of auditory pathologies.
3.	Critically apply theoretical knowledge of the anatomical and physiological processes of speech production for the diagnosis and treatment of auditory pathologies.
