This is the second project in the series of applied business sustainability research modules that make up the Graduate Certificate of Business Research and the Advanced Business Research Specialisation. Collectively these build the knowledge and practical in-depth experience required for conducting more advanced business research, and provide a potential pathway to higher degree by research. In the Applied Qualitative Business Research project students gain practical experience in qualitative research design, as well as the collection and analysis of text-based data.
Qualitative investigation is widely used in business to generate the deeper understanding of stakeholder needs that is essential for informing effective strategy, as well as the design of quantitative research studies. However, qualitative research presents unique challenges, which include in relation to its capture and analysis, as well as common misunderstandings about its function and importance. In the context of a contemporary business sustainability issue, students will engage in the qualitative research process. They will design appropriate qualitative research methodology and instruments, conduct primary qualitative research in the form of depth interviews, and analyse qualitative data generated by manual and automated approaches. On the basis of this analysis, students will also make recommendations, including informing future research direction.
