This unit develops a professional knowledge of English language and culture required for teaching language, literacy and literature in educational settings. It examines a social theory of English language use in context, and its application to communicate different kinds of meaning relevant to specific situations. The unit exemplifies meanings made by spoken and written English language in multimodal texts, used for learning across the Australian Curriculum. Preservice teachers will identify language choices and patterns that construct meanings at whole text level, sentence and clause level, and word level. Key concepts of English language are analysed, including ideas of language function and form, discourse, genre, grammar, phonology and morphology.
