Unit Description

This unit prepares pre-service teachers to teach Languages Other than English (LOTE) subjects in Years Foundation-6, and to engage constructively with the language teaching profession. Pre-service teachers will develop an understanding of relevant LOTE pedagogies and teaching practices in relation to mainstream school settings within the Australian context. The unit requires pre-service teachers to think creatively and interculturally in undertaking a range of professional activities including needs analysis, syllabus design, and evaluating learning materials and technologies. Pre-service teachers will have the opportunity to apply their learning through the development of a multi-themed learning sequence. The unit also enables pre-service teachers to build on their prior knowledge of teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) in Primary settings.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically evaluate the contextual frameworks influencing LOTE teaching in Australia such as mandated curriculum, government policy, and professional debate.
2.	Develop culturally relevant teaching and learning plans for Primary students that reflect the diverse perspectives on language and language learning, and that take into account a supported theoretical perspective.
3.	Plan effective learning sequences and develop a program of work demonstrating a range of different LOTE pedagogies and language learning approaches.
4.	Identify different learner characteristics and how these differences affect curriculum implementation and teaching practices.
5.	Apply knowledge of cultural identities, linguistic profiles, and learner pathways to select appropriate strategies to promote students' active language use and to develop their skills in intercultural communication.
6.	Evaluate and apply relevant technologies to assist effective language learning.
