Unit Description

This unit examines the teaching of beginning language skills such as phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and grammar and the reciprocal relationship between oral language and reading and writing. The unit analyses the cyclical process of reflective planning, active teaching, assessing for learning and providing focused feedback. Preservice teachers make informed judgements about diverse learning needs, including those using English as an additional language, and plan for differentiated teaching when developing an integrated unit of work across the curriculum. Preservice teachers appraise childrens literature including multimodal texts, for classroom use as well as to recommend for home reading and viewing. They will learn digital social and ethical protocols, including managing privacy and digital safety for children.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate the use of phonics and phonological awareness to teach children to read and write.
2.	Critically review theories of early reading and writing development to understand what and how children learn to become literate.
3.	Examine pedagogical practices for early literacy teaching and learning, which includes activities that reflect the inter-relatedness of oral language, early reading and writing.
4.	Assess childrens learning to make informed judgments and plan for differentiated teaching to address the language and literacy needs of diverse learners.
5.	Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching programs designed to support the early literacy development of children from diverse ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds, including those who use English as an additional language.
6.	Appraise a range of texts from multimodal sources for use in the classroom and for home reading.
