Unit Description

This unit introduces students to research methodologies commonly used in education and training sectors. It provides an overview of the debates about, and associated features of, the quantitative and qualitative paradigms and how these are most commonly applied. Students cross-examine claims for research in the context of new understandings of western and non-western knowledge and it offers students the opportunity to develop their capacity to plan a research project.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically evaluate the principles underlying research and how they inform research activity in a broad range of educational settings.
2.	Apply knowledge of various research options available to education researchers with regard to the different philosophies and corresponding methods of data collection and analysis.
3.	Critically evaluate research reports, including the suitability of research approaches, for educational inquiry.
4.	Apply appropriate research methods to a particular research question taking into consideration issues of ethics, measures of reliability and validity, credibility and trustworthiness.
