Unit Description

This unit covers the chemical engineering principles underpinning some of the common unit operations of chemical processes. Particular attention is given to problems of heat transfer, reaction engineering and agitated tanks. The first part of the unit deals with the heat exchange equipment involving both, sensible and latent heat components. The second part of the unit looks in detail at the problems of isothermal and non-isothermal reactor design and operations. The last part of the unit covers the fundamentals of mixing and dispersion, including the selection and scale up of agitators. Kinetics and thermodynamics of the corresponding processes are considered.

This unit is reliant upon on-line materials including electronic submission of assessment items. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection and a scanner.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Recommend the appropriate heat exchange and agitation equipment for a specific chemical process based on heat requirements and fluid properties (e.g. viscosity).
2.	Evaluate heat flow, individual and overall heat transfer coefficients for steady state conduction and convection processes.
3.	Design, size and analyse the performance of ideal reactors for carrying out reversible and irreversible reactions under isothermal and adiabatic conditions.
4.	Carry out a preliminary analysis to identify issues around health and safety and risk associated with the operation of reactors, stirred tanks and heat exchange equipment.
5.	Demonstrate appropriate and effective oral and written communication competencies.
