This unit links the Chemical Engineering specialization to oil and gas refining by providing a comprehensive treatment of hydrocarbon processing operations. Northern Territory context is brought through the emphasis on the upstream natural gas processing and Liquidfied Natural Gas (LNG) production.
The unit covers the hydrocarbon processing chain from the reservoir to the customer. It looks in detail at the thermodynamic and economic reasons behind the choice of certain technologies and equipment at various stages of the process. Particular attention is paid to the risk analysis and mitigation during production, processing and transportation of hydrocarbons. Associated sustainability issues are discussed.
The students are presented with a number of case studies for analysis and evaluation.
This unit is reliant on on-line materials including electronic submission of assessment items. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection and a scanner.
