Unit Description

This unit facilitates a synthesised understanding of historical and contemporary social and cultural influences on childrens lives and learning through policy, programs and practices. Preservice teachers will critically consider and learn to apply principles that respond to the diverse, complex experiences and abilities of children, including negotiated partnerships with families and communities. They will develop a sophisticated understanding of the complex and contested nature of identity formation in children, including around gender identity and gender expression (with non-binary dichotomies), and family and cultural diversity. Preservice teachers will learn how to meaningfully embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in education and care settings by adopting a holistic approach recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples connectedness to people, place and spiritual and cultural histories. Preservice teachers will recognise the key role of early childhood education and care in advancing Reconciliation.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Research historical, contemporary and contextual impacts on diverse physical, emotional, social, cultural, linguistic, religious and intellectual needs and strengths of children in the early years.
2.	Critically analyse the tenets of planning for diverse learners in the classroom and apply knowledge of current policies and research to planning and teaching.
3.	Apply knowledge and understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
4.	Apply skills to implement authentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in all aspects of a childs learning and development in early years learning settings.
5.	Critically reflect on children having multiple and changing identities and plan for young children that have a non-normative developing identity.
