Unit Description

This unit develops professional critical reflection and analysis of contemporary issues relevant to educators and professionals working in early childhood care and education leadership roles. Preservice teachers will undertake planning for an action research project and practical implementation of resilience skills, developing their critical analysis, reflexivity and advocacy skills in relation to a range of contemporary early childhood issues. Preservice teachers will have opportunities to identify and justify their own professional positions and perspectives based on ethical considerations, socio-political positioning, empirical evidence and legislative requirements that govern early childhood contexts. This unit supports preservice teacher's resilience, reflexivity and reflective capabilities for sustained professional growth and continuous quality improvement.

1.	Critically analyse and compare historical, cultural and political representations of childhood and the impact of the different constructions of childhood on policy, practice and public value of early childhood systems.
2.	Critically examine and identify personal beliefs regarding contemporary socio-political issues of difference that confront professionals who work in the early childhood field.
3.	Critically review current curricula, pedagogical and assessment issues in early childhood, in relations to various sources of knowledge (epistemology) within the context of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educational issues and inclusive practice.
4.	Apply a mastery of curricula and pedagogical knowledge to justify personal and professional standpoint on a contemporary issue and responsive future focused actions.
5.	Design an appropriate self-management strategies for leadership and sustained professional growth.
