Unit Description

Vulnerable populations often experience health conditions that are exacerbated by inadequate healthcare. This unit introduces students to key concepts in working with vulnerable populations across a variety of healthcare settings. Students will develop knowledge, expertise and skills, with an emphasis on social policy and the legal and ethical requirements for working with 'at-risk' people. Understanding of how health professionals can work with individuals and communities to address the factors leading to vulnerability will be addressed. The unit builds on evidence-based research in health, nursing, midwifery, psychological and sociological sciences to address key issues related to health equity. A focus on populations who experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and social disparities and is designed to prepare students to assess and develop management strategies to care for vulnerable populations in either low resource or complex environments.

The offerings for Perth and North Melbourne are only available to International students. Special Enrolment is required through eForms for these locations.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically discuss the social, economic, political, environmental and other factors that place vulnerable populations at risk.
2.	Critique the needs of vulnerable populations based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic, gender, age demographics and geography.
3.	Analyse evidence-based practice for the healthcare for vulnerable populations including interprofessional collaboration, training and the ethical and legal aspects of care.
4.	Review and critique current social policy for vulnerable populations.
5.	Evaluate the strategies to decrease disparities in health care at the regional, national and global level.
6.	Apply concepts of health determinants in the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing and health care delivery programs.

3.
