Unit Description

This unit explores the contemporary association of Australian Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with land and sea, and the use of resources derived from their estates. Students examine historical association with, and ownership regimes related to, land and sea, their impact on contemporary society and their interaction with colonial concepts of land and sea ownership and resource use. Various avenues for the recognition of land and title rights for Indigenous people in Australia are explored within the context of colonial history and compared across jurisdictions. A number of local and international case studies of conflicts and cooperation are studied to provide a cross-section of the ways in which Indigenous people own and use land and sea resources, and how these inform existing and potential policy making processes.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Describe and explain Australian Indigenous people's historical and contemporary association with land, sea and the resources derived from them.
2.	Demonstrate an understanding of the various legal and administrative instruments available to Indigenous people to acquire ownership and/or rights to resources within land and sea estates within contemporary society.
3.	Describe and analyse legal and administrative instruments established for the protection of sites of significance in Indigenous land and sea estates.
4.	Compare and contrast various legal and administrative instruments for land and sea ownership plus access to resource rights.
5.	Analyse the impact of the various instruments for acquisition of land and sea ownership and rights to resources on contemporary Indigenous cultures and societies.
