Unit Description

Legal Clinic is a specialist elective law unit that offers students the opportunity to gain real-world legal experience in a professional environment. Students undertaking this unit have the opportunity to extend their existing knowledge and skills in a clinical legal setting under the supervision of a legal practitioner. Completing a legal placement will allow students to develop critical insights into the practice of law and develop practical skills that will help prepare them for the transition to professional work.

Legal Clinic placements are 10 days and arranged in consultation with the Unit Coordinator. The unit includes workshops to develop professional skills. Enrolment in this unit is via manual enrolment only. Students must have completed at least 80 credit points of their course with a minimum GPA 5.0 in order to enrol. Students can apply via an expression of interest process made to the Unit Coordinator: contact BLPlacements@cdu.edu.au.

1.	Apply practical legal skills particularly relating to work routines, communication, interviewing, writing, and legal research.
2.	Critically reflect on personal motivation for studying law, goals and career aspirations.
3.	Apply professional legal ethics and demonstrate an understanding of professional legal obligations in Australia and social justice.
4.	Critically reflect on how knowledge and skills acquired through the study of law relate to a legal practice setting, assisting individual clients and working for social justice.
