Unit Description

Nursing is one of the most trusted professions in the world due to it's standards, ethics and governance. This unit introduces contemporary nursing practice and the political, legal and ethical frameworks which regulate it. Using standards of practice and the relationship between law and ethics, students will understand how nursing practice is regulated and implications for practice as a registered nurse in the Australian healthcare system.

Students will explore local, national and global challenges to patient safety in healthcare. National and global standards in healthcare will be investigated from a consumer expectation and clinical practitioner lens.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Explain the role and responsibilities of the registered nurse as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to attain culturally safe and quality health outcomes.
2.	Discuss and reflect on the Registered Nurse standards and scope of practice in relation to other nursing and healthcare roles.
3.	Discuss legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse in diverse healthcare settings including mental health, aged care, remote health and medication management.
4.	Identify and respond to legal and ethical issues in professional nursing practice in alignment with NSQHS standards.
