Unit Description

In this unit students will explore play - the primary occupation for children - which promotes good health and wellbeing. Students will also explore the role of schooling and leisure in the physical, psychological and social development of adolescents. Various challenges, such as physical or mental impairment, trauma or abuse, which can impact occupational performance of children and adolescents and their participation in everyday life will be investigated.

Students will participate in Practice Education of 170 hours. During which students will, with minimal supervision: - practice authentic occupational therapy practice. - implement the occupational therapy process and competencies through a range of activities. These may include assessments, provision services to individuals and or groups. The placement may be in traditional or non-traditional areas of practice.

The practice education of 170 hours within this unit forms part of the 1000 hours of practice education mandated by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and is guided by the Australian Minimum Competency Standards for New Graduate Occupational Therapists (Occupational Therapy Board of Australia 2018). The practice education will consist of WIL and simulation.

1.	Critically reflect on the key occupations of children and understand the various components of the person, the environment and the context that impact on occupational performance.
2.	Critically reflect on the key occupations of adolescents and understand the various components of the person, the environment, the context that impact on occupational performance.
3.	Design an occupational therapy plan for enabling participation of a child or adolescent with an impairment.
4.	Apply occupational therapy skills in line with the professional codes of conduct and ethical practice with moderate supervision.
5.	Translate theoretical concepts to practice and undertaking critical reflection, with minimal supervision.
