Unit Catalogue

This unit will assist students in developing mathematical skills and knowledge to provide the background for further study in a variety of higher education fields such as engineering, information technology (IT) and applied science. Students study via a combination of lectures, tutorials and assignments. Approximately 8 hours per week to be devoted to assignment preparation.

The topics include: revision of algebraic operations and application of algebra to polynomials and functions, trigonometry, right angle and obtuse triangle trigonometry and its applications, vector operations and their application, exponential and logarithmic functions and their application, differential calculus concept introduction and application of rules of differentiation. Throughout the unit, students will also learn problem solving strategies and have opportunities to apply these to real-life contexts. The range of learning experiences provided in this unit will enable students to develop their skills in interpreting and identifying key information in mathematical problems, selecting appropriate strategies to solve problems and in analysing and communicating solutions appropriately for the given context.
