Unit Description

This unit covers the application of Big Data tools and technologies. It establishes a strong working knowledge of the concepts, techniques and products. The main focus is on the graph data, tree-structured extensible markup language, data, key-value pair and nested pairs, semi-structured Java Script Object Notation data, columnar and record-oriented data as well as object-oriented data. The fragmentation, replication and consistency strategies for data management in distributed databases will also be covered. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection.

1.	Apply methods/techniques and tools required to identify and obtain information from data silos.
2.	Critically examine standards, techniques and tools used to access a variety of data from media.
3.	Evaluate and recommend different database systems for different purposes.
4.	Analyse issues relating to multi-model databses and multi-databse architectures.
5.	Critically evaluate the ethical requirements relating to the organisation, management, storage and stewardship of data.
