HIT140 Foundations of Data Science

Unit Description

This unit covers data analytical concepts, techniques and algorithms and students will explore how these can be applied to data analytics and visualisation. Advanced analytical methods including clustering, classification, regression analysis, time series and text analysis will be covered. The understanding and application of data analytics can help in effective decision making and to gain new insights from large data sets. Visualisation will assist with presenting large and complex data sets and outcomes.

Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection.

1.	Apply appropriate statistical techniques to evaluate data analysis models.
2.	Critically analyse the role of data analysis task in an organisational context.
3.	Justify the process or methods used to analyse large data sets.
4.	Design and implement a pipeline to analyse a large heterogenous dataset.
5.	Ability to process large data sets using appropriate technologies.
6.	Apply communication skills to present data processing results, orally and in written form.
