Unit Description

In this unit students will explore the diversity of ways that humans can communicate. Students will integrate their knowledge of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to understand the ways in which lifelong and acquired disability can impact on communication. Students will learn about the theory, design and implementation of aided and unaided Augmentative and Alternative Communication, including Assistive Technology, and multimodal communication across the lifespan.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Integrate knowledge of current theoretical perspectives and contemporary literature in clinical decision-making regarding multimodal communication and augmentative and alternative communication.
2.	Practise evidence-based assessment and analysis of communication skills, needs, environments and methods, considering barriers and facilitators for communication.
3.	Analyse and integrate assessment results and case information to formulate evidence-based, person-centred management plans for clients with complex communication difficulties.
4.	Evaluate the role of the speech and language therapist and other members of the management team, in assessment, implementation and ongoing support of multimodal communication and augmentative and alternative communication.
5.	Integrate knowledge of the ICF framework to evaluate the impact of complex communication difficulties on a clientÂ¿s activity and participation across their environments.
