Unit Description

Students will attend a 120 hour clinical placement covering paediatric and adult caseloads to introduce them to the profession of speech pathology, clinical practice and working with clients. This unit will also cover curriculum content to support students' beginning clinical skills in the following areas: Informal administration of early childhood speech and language screening tools; analysis and interpretation of typically developing speech and language; progress note and report templates; goal-setting and; the multidisciplinary team in speech pathology practice. On completion of this unit, students are expected to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours which constitute a novice level of competency, as described in the Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology (COMPASS®).

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Establish a novice level of competency as described in the Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology (COMPASS®).
2.	Critically reflect on own knowledge, skills and attributes and source opportunities to further skill development and clinical competency.
3.	Apply data collection and analysis, goal-setting and documentation for clients with non-complex communication disorders, with supervision.
4.	Implement communication and interpersonal skills to establish professional relationships with clients, carers, colleagues and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
5.	Evaluate the role of multidisciplinary professionals and the client/carers in the holistic management of non-complex communication disorders.
