Unit Description

This unit requires students to apply theory underpinning direct practice in Social Work and Human Services for working with individuals and families, across the life cycle. Emphasis is placed on working in partnership using an empowering, client-focused approach with individuals and families and the student will have the opportunity to examine different theoretical approaches and evaluate their effectiveness through consideration of case studies, current research evidence and views from practitioners. Students will continue to develop their professional practice framework with opportunities for skills development in the area of Social Work.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse the key theories that underpin direct practice for Social Work and Human Services.
2.	Critically analyse theoretical perspectives that inform work with individuals and families.
3.	Critically evaluate evidence in relation to the effectiveness of approaches to working with individuals and families.
4.	Critically analyse the complex nature of direct practice, especially the impact of the organisational context on working with individuals and families.
5.	Ciritically apply theory, methods and skills to support Social Work practice.
6.	Identify and apply theoretical knowledge to practical tasks including conducting an assessment and developing an action plan.
7.	Critically reflect on a range of social work and human service practice issues with respect to the impact of socio-economic status, life opportunities, trauma and environment on psychosocial health and well-being across the life cycle.
